Before the island was divided into Haiti (Ayiti: Meaning Land Of High Mountains) and the Dominican Republic, the entire island was one ☝🏾 & inhabited by the Taíno people.
The Taíno organized the island into Territorial chiefdoms (called “Cacicazgos”), each ruled by a chief called a cacique.
Together, these regions made up the Taíno civilization on the island before European colonization began after 1492.
The division into Haiti and the Dominican Republic happened much later (17th–19th centuries), long after Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas and Spanish colonization began. The split wasn’t something the Taíno created—it was the result of European colonization, competition between Spain and France, slavery, and later independence movements over several centuries.
These were tribes that made up the entire island:
• Marien – Northwest
• Maguá – Northeast
• Maguana – Center
• Jaragua – Southwest
• Higüey – East
